Mutations of the spirit of conquest: Please, do not disturbAgathe Novak-Lechevalier is a lecturer at Université Paris Nanterre. Her areas of research include the novel, the theater and narratives in the 19th century and their influences in the 20th and 21st centuries. For Dia a Dia, team614 submitted a passage from Father Goriot (Honoré de Balzac, 1842) and a passage from Serotonin (Michel Houellebecq, 2019). Both present urban situations in Paris with no apparent quality. While she believes that Balzac yesterday and Houellebecq today “make the novel a place of elucidation of the social world”, Agathe has endeavoured to show how they also reveal the most banal experiences of our cities.

Between lucidity and cruelty, his work questions the city and its imagination. Clément portrays the generic city through novel characters, including Patrick Bateman, the hero of Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial American Psycho. An author often associated with Michel Houellebecq, who shares his cynicism and taste for anonymous and unremarkable spaces. What could the spatial personification of the characters of Bret Easton Ellis and Michel Houellebec be? Difficult to say, except in all the ordinary spaces we encounter every day.

Living an ordinary commonValentin Bourdon is a French architect and a PhD student at the Laboratory of Construction and Conservation (LCC), École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, since 2017. His research explores the Common as an architectural subject. In support of significant historical experiences, and contemporary subjects, such a project aims to help overcome the delay taken by architecture comparing to other disciplines in the appropriation of the notion of ‘common’. More specifically, it focuses on the significant relationships between architecture, Common and habitat, across the scale of the city, that of the collective space and that of the housing unit.

Dominique Perrault is a French architect and urban planner. Since the construction of the National Library of France in Paris (1995), he has built many institutional buildings, including the Court of Justice of the European Union. This extraordinary workplace is a golden case set on the Kirchberg plateau in Luxembourg and, nevertheless, the scene for the 2200 people who tread its ground every day. This series of images reveals the architect's faithful collaboration with photographer Georges Fessy, who has captured the firm's most emblematic buildings.
