Mutations of the spirit of conquest: Please, do not disturb
Agathe Novak-Lechevalier is a lecturer at Université Paris Nanterre. Her areas of research include the novel, the theater and narratives in the 19th century and their influences in the 20th and 21st centuries. For Dia a Dia, team614 submitted a passage from Father Goriot (Honoré de Balzac, 1842) and a passage from Serotonin (Michel Houellebecq, 2019). Both present urban situations in Paris with no apparent quality. While she believes that Balzac yesterday and Houellebecq today “make the novel a place of elucidation of the social world”, Agathe has endeavoured to show how they also reveal the most banal experiences of our cities.
